When I was younger, I believed that to be happy and fulfilled I just needed to be free to make my own decisions. I was smart, I was resourceful, I was confident. I could figure things out for myself.
Many years and stumbles later, I discovered a truth that serves me well. What I know for sure, as Oprah would say, is that fulfillment and happiness depends on how I live and relate to the world.
I found that when I practice and live by these seven values, my life is filled with joy.
1. Empathy
Empathy is the ability to sense another person’s emotions, to understand and tune in to what they are feeling or thinking. When we have empathy, we can be present with them and respond appropriately. Empathy allows us to have a deeper connection and enhances our relationships.
2. Compassion
Compassion is a response of genuine care for another person that motivates in us a desire to help and relieve their suffering. Compassion gives us energy and a sense of purpose and direction. It helps us feel alive.
3. Forgiveness
To forgive is to let go of the pain that binds us to the past. To forgive is to break away from the constraints that hold us prisoner preventing us from living in the present. Forgiveness opens us up to a future of freedom and choice.
4. Acceptance
Acceptance is about seeing people as they are. It’s about holding the space for them to show up in our lives in their own truth. Acceptance is about recognizing a person’s authentic self without judgment. Acceptance allows us to develop a more positive attitude towards others.
5. Listening
When we really listen, we are totally immersed on what the other person is saying. Listening requires us to suspend judgement and to focus on the real meaning of the message. Listening effectively allows us to make real connections and establish positive relationships.
6. Humility
Humility is to have an open mind and be teachable. It is knowing that we don’t have all the answers, that there is much we can learn from others. Humility is knowing the vulnerability of not knowing. Humility allows us to grow and to support others in their growth.
7. Curiosity
Curiosity is the desire to learn about anything and everything. Curiosity allows us to see new worlds and possibilities that are not always visible or obvious. Curious people always ask questions. Curiosity brings excitement into our lives, making our lives far from boring, dull or routine.
Living by these seven values is not always easy or comfortable. Yet, without them we isolate ourselves in a world void of meaningful relationships and joy.
“If you don’t stick to your values when they’re being tested, they’re not values: they’re hobbies.” Jon Stewart
